You have surely seen aircraft on more than one occasion which are visible, especially at night, through a set of lights, some of which are fixed and others flashing. The striking result of this set of lights may seem like a random combination, but each of them has a specific mission and reason.

The importance of external aircraft lights resides in the fact of their two-fold function: to see and be seen.

Though the type of light, its location and the procedures set for its use may vary from one aircraft to the next and the company which operates them, not all of them are mandatory.

We take a look at the most common external lights on commercial aircraft in this infographic and explain the use and mission of each one of them. The next time you see an aeroplane flying past above you, you will certainly understand the meaning of each of these lights.
